Winning best shod horse Alresford show 2010Welcome to Tom Smith Farriers. We are an established and respected farriery business based near Winchester in Hampshire. We practise both normal and remedial farriery to the highest standard, with comfort and support providing the basis for the soundness to your horse. If you seek a friendly, reliable and capable farrier we can provide the service you are looking for.

Tom Smith Farriers has been running for several years now and has steadily grown into a business on which customers can trust and rely. We take real pride in ensuring that the best style of shoe, implemented with comfort, balance and performance in mind, is used in a calm and unrushed manner to suit both the horse and the riders’ specific needs. Traditional techniques are used together with modern methods, using the best tools and equipment. The horse is individually assessed to consider the effect shoeing will have on the whole body, not just the hoof capsule. We believe that no two horses should be shod exactly the same, and it is a real skill that seems to have been lost to be able to shoe different horses in many styles.

Liam Shoeing a horseLiam Ingram DipWCF has been working with Tom since March 2010 and has become an invaluable and trusted farrier within the business. Having two fully qualified farriers working from the same establishment means that we can be much more efficient in responding to customers' and their horses' needs, have a greater pool of experience and knowledge to draw upon and can cope well with the larger and more demanding yards. It also means that veterinary work can be completed quickly without a great delay from booking to completion. All remedial shoes are made or fabricated by hand to ensure they are the best possible design for your horses needs. Tom is an Approved Training Farrier (ATF) and is eligible to train apprentices. Joe Lawson joined the team to undertake his modern apprenticeship in Farriery in April 2011 and is quickly becomming a very useful addition!

We work regularly for high class professional horse owners, competing in disciplines from Grand Prix dressage and team GB riders to top class polo; point to point horses and hunters; show jumpers and eventers are all shod fit for purpose to maximise performance. An increasing demand for good remedial shoeing has lead to us providing a service to customers over a large area looking for a farrier prepared to consult veterinary surgeons, with the aim of returning the horse to sound work.

We offer a slow motion gait analysis service. If you want to maximise the performance of your horse, record a quantitative picture of the current level of your horse for future comparison, try to find a low grade lameness that is not obvious to the eye, this service may be very helpful to you. We regularly use this tool to analyse shoeing and balance, to provide us with accurate information that can be quantified and translated into intelligent shoeing or trimming. Improvements can be measured at regular intervals to maintain maximum effectiveness. We regularly work in association with experts in the ‘equine body work’ and veterinary fields to maximise the effectiveness of the results the analysis may provide. Reports are always available following analysis.
